It was now about Late April time 1987, our New House was a bit of a Tip really, the Person we Exchanged Houses with, was as we found out, a Bit Of a, shall we say “Scum”

The House had been Left in a State with Stains all over the Carpets, one particular Stain near the Front Door, was from 1 of Her Kids “Throwin Up” we Dumped all the Crappy Carpets and any other “Crap” left from Her!

It took Weeks to get Clean & Tidy and all Traces of the Previous Tenant “Gone”, another thing that was Really Annoying, was all the House Pipes ran through the Bathroom, “At the top of the Wall” this meant every time we had a Bath, all the Pipes “Condensated” and Dripped down on to the Floor, what a Dump we had moved to!

Every Weekend, Us and the Kids, went back to Great Yarmouth, to see Family etc, and this is when I used to go to the “Cash & Carry” to Buy Stock for my Mobile Shop.

I used to Buy all Types of Household Items, Fruit & Veg, Sweets, Cakes & Toiletries etc etc, anything I thought I could Sell Really!

After I finally got everything ready to Start going out and about in the Van, I realised the Van would have to be Parked outside the House at Night, with all that “Stock” in there, so I decided I needed to Park the Van in a Driveway, for Safety!

So for Quickness I knocked down our Front Wall and starting Reversing the Van into that Space at Night Times with the Back Door right up to the Front Window, I then Slept Easier at Night!

I then started going out during the Day, around Council Estates, Old Peoples Homes etc, looking for Business, I knew “Norwich” well so I picked a Few Places well known Places!

I had a small Problem when I got to these Places, apart from knocking on Doors, I needed something to let them Know I was there!

My “Old Boy” suggested I had a “Bell” to ring when I got there, as it turned out my “Grandad” had a fair sized Bell (from years ago), which I Borrowed, and from then on when I arrived at certain places “I Started to Ring the Bell” & it Worked!

Up until then, we were getting on Fine in “Norwich” but things were soon to Change!

By the Early 80’s the US Media were Calling “TP” the “Black Elvis” and He was one of “The Hottest Properties” in the US!

We must be around Easter Time 1987, I with the Help of my Father had just Brought a Van from an Auction, I had to go back next day to pick it up!

In them days they had to do Checks and the money had to go through etc etc, So the next day I took Nathan with me , to go & get the Van, I cant Remember how we got there, but I can Remember getting the Keys and Starting it up for the First Time, it did not start at First!

Anyway the Auction Place was a Few Miles away and we came back on the Inner-Ring Road in Norwich, cant really remember the Journey back, but what I can remember is, we got about 2 Minutes from Home, and the Van Just stopped!

We had just about Reached the Heartsease Roundabout in the City, and we had ran out of Petrol, we had to Push the Van up on the Kerb and then went to Buy a Jerry Can & then get some Petrol, Luckily there was a Garage very near by!

All of this took a little While, so when we Finally got Home that Day, Susan had been Worrying where we were had been for about 3 Hours!

What an Eventful day that had been!

We spent the rest of Easter getting the Van Cleaned and ready for the start of my New Business!

What I was going to do was, carry on Making Pies, Cornish Pasties Sausage Rolls etc and go to Fetes Shows etc to Sell them, I also was going to Buy (for the Van) Groceries, Sweets and Toiletries to Sell around the Estates of Norwich.

I was going to do whatever I could to make it Work, so I was looking in to what Areas I could Sell around, including where we were now Living!

ARTIST NUMBER 3………………AL GREEN

This is the Artist who got my Vote, I would say he’s the Best Soul Singer of All Time by a Mile!

I think Marvin Gaye is a Great Soul Singer, but not the same Level as Al Green, and I think Luther Vandross was going a bit over to Pop Music by the end of His Career.

I have Written many Post’s on Al Green and his Music, so put his name in the Search Box, to Read more in-Depth Stuff on Al Green!

Now for a Brief Summary of Al Green’s Career and life!

Born in Forrest City, Arkansas on 13th April 1946, Albert Greene was the 6th Child to Robert and Cora Greene, they had 10 in Total

He Started Singing at the Age of 10, in a Band called “The Greene Brothers”

At His High School, He Created and Started a Band by the Name of “Al Greene and the Creations”

This Band also included 2 Friends by the Names of “Curtis Rogers” and “Palmer James”

Around this same Period, Rogers and James Created their own Record Label called “Hot Line Music Journal”

By 1967 the Band had a Name Change to “Al Greene and the Soul Mates” they Recorded their First Track called “Back Up Train” and Released it on Their own hi

A couple of other Track’s followed, but all Flopped!

After this Al Greene Decided to go Solo, He Released his First Album on His Friend’s Record Label “Hot Line” it was also called “Back Up Train” most of the Track’s were Written by Rogers and James, also a Chap by the Name of “Tiny Watkins” Al Green Wrote One Track!

The Album again didn’t do Well and the Record Label Folded.

Al Green Met Willie Mitchell in 1969, when Mitchell, was Hiring Musicians for His Band, he was so Impressed with Al Greens Voice that He asked Him to Record an Album for “Hi Records” which Mitchell has joined a Couple of Years earlier.

By now “Al Green” had Dropped the “E” form His Name and on 15th April 1969, His Debut Record on the “Hi Record Label” was Released!

The Title Was “Green is Blues” and it was Produced by “Willie Mitchell” it had a lot of Cover version’s on there including: My Girl by Smokey Robinson, I Stand Accused by Jerry Butler and Get Back by The Beatles.

It was a Moderate Success!

The Second Album was Released on “Hi” in 1970 and called “Get’s Next To You” it was a Hit, it included a Remake of The Temptations Hit “I Cant Get Next To You”

This turned out to be “Al Greens” first of 6 Consecutive Gold Single Hits in the US.

The Rest Musically is History!

A Small Piece on His Private Life, A well Documented Incident Happened in 1974 to Al Green, this Slowly Turned him “To The Lord” and by 1976 He had become “An Ordained Pastor” at His own “Memphis Full Gospel Tabernacle” in Memphis.

Between 1981 and 1989 Al Green Recorded several Full Gospel Albums, that were Equally Well Received by the Record Buying Public, as he was Rewarded with 8 Gospel Grammy’s.

To bring Al Green’s Story right up to Date, I saw him in Concert, 2 Year’s ago at “The O2 Arena ” in London and He was “Fantastic” a Truly Great Singer and Performer, Brilliant!

As I write He is still Touring in the “USA” He was at the “Famous Beale Street Music Festival” in Memphis on 5th of May (see Below), and His next Date is 15th June in “Illinois” and this Tour Finishes in August this Year!

What a “Great Performer” I Hope I get another Chance to see Al Green, Sometime in the Future!

Here is Al Green’s Full Discography:

29 Studio Albums
23 Compilation Albums
1 Live Album
43 Single Releases

20 OF AL GREEN’S FINEST TRACK’S!
