ARTIST NUMBER 7…………..BERNARD EDWARDS 

Bernard Edwards was Born on the 18th of April 1952, in Greenville, North Carolina USA, but Moved to Brooklyn NYC at an Early Age.


He met Nile Rodgers in the Early 1970’s, they were Both Session Musicians around the New York Area, they Later  Formed a Band Together in 1972 and were named “The Boys” and Later to become the “Big Apple Band” Despite Playing Gigs and Making Demo’s, they were Never to be Signed to Any Label, the Band Lasted until 1976!

Then in 1976 they Added 2 New Members to the Band, Tony Thompson on Drums and Norma Jean Wright on Vocals and Changed their Name to “Chic”


By 1977 they were Signed to “Atlantic Records” and Chic’s First “Self Titled” Album was Released that same Year in 1977, it Reached Number 27 on the US Pop Chart and Number 12 on the US R&B Chart.

The First Single off the Album was also “Chic’s” First Hit Record, Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah
it Reached Number 6 on both US Pop and R&B Charts!

Their next Hit Single from the Album was “Everybody Dance” but it did not Chart as well as their Debut Single.

The Track also Had Luther Vandross on Backing Vocals.


It was not until their Second Album in 1978 “C’est Chic” that Chic got their First Number One Single, on Both US Pop and R&B Charts, that was “Le Freak” incidentally this was to be Chic’s Best Selling Album of All Time!

Chic had 2 Number One Singles in their Career, “Le Freak and “Good Times”

By 1983 Chic were to Split Up, Both Edwards and Rodgers were to say the Split was Down to “Personal and Artistic Reasons”


In 1985 “Bernard Edwards” was to Release his only Solo Album entitled “Glad to be Here” it was Not a Big Hit!

That same Year if 1985 he was to Record and Produce an Album with the Band called “Power Station” it Featured “Tony Thompson” from Chic and 2 Members from Duran Duran and Robert Palmer.

He went on to Work with Numerous different Acts from the Recording World, i.e Robert Palmer, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Duran Duran, ABC and Adam Ant.

He also Produced Records for Various Artists including: Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Busta Rhymes.


In the Early 1990’s “Chic” were Briefly to Reform and later in 1992  Release their Last Ever Album “Chic-ism” 

In 1996 “Bernard Edwards” was named “JT Super Producer of the Year” in Japan, and he and Chic were Invited to Play a Gig in Japan, a Live Album was Later Released of the Live Concert, it was called “Live at the Budokan” 

Bernard Edwards was taken Unwell the Night before the Concert, but Insisted in going on with the Gig, he had to be Physically Helped During the Show and to actually Finish it, but that Night in his Hotel Room, he was to “Pass Away” in his Sleep!

It was later Discovered that “Bernard Edwards” had Died from “Pneumonia”


In 2005, Bernard Edwards was Honored Posthumously for his Outstanding Achievements as a Producer and was Inducted into the “Dance Music Hall of Fame”

ARTIST NUMBER 6…………..LOUIS JOHNSON 

Louis Johnson was Born on April 13th 1955 in Los Angeles, California USA.

During his School Days, He was to Form a Band with his 2 Brother’s “George and Tommy” and a Cousin by the Name of Alex Weir, the band was called “Three Plus One”

In the Early 70’s Louis and George Johnson were in the Backing Band’s for a Two different Artists, Bobby Womack and The Supremes, they later  also both Joined Billy Preston‘s Band, but left in 1973.


They were both Hired in 1975 by Quincy Jones to Play on his Album “Mellow Madness” during that same Year they both Toured with Bobby Womack and Billy Preston.

During Late ’75 early ’76, The Brothers Decided to Form their Own Band and called themselves “The Brothers Johnson” Their Debut Album was called “Look Out For # 1” it was Produced by Quincy Jones and on the A&M Record Label.

The Album Reached Number 9 on the US Pop Chart and Number 1 on the US R&B Chart, it also Attained Platinum Status!

During their Career “The Brothers Johnson” were to Release a Total of 7 Albums, between 1979 to 1988, all on the A&M Record Label.

The Brothers Split up in 1982, but Reunited Twice in 1984 and 1988, Both Brothers had a Brief Solo Careers, Louis Released 2 Albums During this Period.

ARTIST NUMBER 3…………..LARRY GRAHAM 

This Week’s Bass Player is my Second Favorite Player of All-Time…Larry Graham, not only a Great Bass Player of Funk Record’s but he also Recorded One of the All-Time Great Soul Ballads!  

Larry Graham Jr was Born on the 14th August 1946, in Beaumont Texas USA, He is a Musician, Songwriter and Record Producer, as well as Playing the Bass, he Plays the Keyboards, and also a Great Singer!

He Moved to California when he was 3 Years Old, to be Raised by his GrandMother, as his Mother was an  Piano Player in a Band, who were Touring the World!

Not to long later he was Moved again with his Family to Hawaii, again a few Years Later, he was Re-United with his Mother and they Moved to Oakland, California.

In 1961 he Joined his Mother in her Band, she was also Teaching him how to Sing, in the Early Days, Larry Graham used to Cover Ballads, by the Likes of Billy Eckstein and Tony Bennett

He Joined Sly and the Family Stone, after a Request from Sly Stone in 1966!

The First Album (on Epic Records) from Sly and the Family Stone was Released in 1967, and Called “A Whole New Thing” it was Not a Big Seller!

It was the Following Year on 27th April 1968 that Sly and the Family Stone had their Break Through Album, it was called “Dance To The Music” and the Title Track was a Hit in the USA, both Pop and R&B Charts!

Larry Graham Featured on a Total Of 5 Albums with Sly and the Family Stone, before Leaving in late 1972!

The following Year of ’73, Larry Graham was Producing an Album for a Band named “Hot Chocolate” (Not the English Band) he was asked to Join the Band and they had a Name Change to “Graham Central Station” 

GCS Released their Debut Album in 1974, it was Called “Graham Central Station” the Album reached the Top 20 on the US R&B Chart!

Larry Graham and GCS went on to Release a Total Of 7 Albums up until 1979, before Larry Graham Decided to go Solo and put GCS on the Back Burner for a Few Years!

By 1980 Larry Graham Released his First Solo Album, on Warner Brother Records, it was entitled “One in a Million You” it was a big Hit in the US, Reaching Number 1 on the R&B Chart and Number 9 on the Hot 100 Chart!

The Biggest Single on the Album was the Great “Sam Dees” Track, “One in a Million You” it Reached Number 1 on the US R&B Chart and Number 9 on the US Pop 100 Chart.

This is One of my Favorite All-Time Tracks!

Larry Graham went on to Release a further 4 Albums on Warner Brothers Records.

By the Early 1990’s he was back Touring with Graham Central Station.

In 1998 GCS Released their First Album in 10 Years, on NPG Record Label (New Power Generation), which was Owned By Prince, who also Co-Produced with Larry Graham.

Larry Graham and GCS are still Recording, with their Latest Album being Released in September of this Year entitled “Raise Up” again Featuring “Prince” a Great Comeback Album!
