In this Series of Posts, I will writing about a Particular Classic Soul/Funk Album from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s

The one’s that stand out in my Mind, as The Best Soul/Funk/Jazz/R&B Albums ever Released. All of them, I purchased on Vinyl many Years ago and also now have them on CD or Digital Download today.

You may have a Differing view (as we all do) on these Choices, but these are my Favorites!

Number 17…….DAYTON…….FEEL THE MUSIC

Dayton Released their 4th Out Of 5 Career Albums on the Capitol Record label in 1983, it was called “Feel the Music”

It was Produced by Rahni Harris apart from Track 5 which was Produced by Roger Troutman, incidentally all the Troutman Brothers appeared on the Track!

Only One Track made the US R&B Charts, that was “It Must Be Love” which reached Number 54!

My Favorite Track on the Album is “Promise Me” I’ve Played this Track more than the Rest put Together!

Another Great Track on the Album was “Sound Of Music” which was Very Popular on the UK Dance Scene.

Not Forgetting the Zapp Produced Track “Love You Anyway”

The Track’s I liked the Least are “Eyes” its a Sort of Rock Track, and the Reggae Sounding “Looking Up”

NUMBER 7……..ZAPP……….ZAPP

The Debut Album from Zapp was Released on 18th July 1980, it was called “Zapp” it was on the Warner Brothers Record Label and entirely Wrote by Roger Troutman, who also Produced the Album with “Bootsy Collins”

Roger Troutman and Zapp were originally part of George Clinton‘s Empire.

The Album followed shortly after the Number 2 Debut Single from Zapp “More Bounce to the Ounce” the Album went straight to Number 1 in the US Billboard R&B Albums Chart, and Number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The Album was finally Released on “Warners” after some confusion because Prior to the Success of the Single, Zapp were going to Sign to George Clinton’s Record Label “Uncle Jam Records” but after the Single being a Big Hit, Roger Troutman was offered more Money to stay at “Warners” and so his Friendship with “George Clinton” ended, in fact George Clinton Sued both Roger Troutman and Warners!

I don’t know whether this Story is 100% as I have read a couple of different stories on the Net.

The Album had some Great Tracks, my Favorites were : obviously “More Bounce”  Be Alright and “Coming Home”

The Full Track Listing is as follows:

ZAPP SIDE ONE:
  • More Bounce to the Ounce-9:25
  • Freedom-3:48
  • Brand New Player-5:51
ZAPP SIDE TWO:
  • Funky Bounce-6:46
  • Be Alright-7:52
  • Coming Home-6:34

The Album Personnel were as follows:

  • Percussion-Larry and Lester Troutman
  • Conga Drums-Larry Troutman
  • Trapp Drums-Lester Troutman
  • Bass-Zapp Troutman
  • Sax-Carl
  • Keyboards-Greg Jackson
  • Guitars-Bootsy Collins
  • Guitars, Vocals, Keyboards, Talking Box, Bass, Harmonica, and vibes-Roger Troutman

Note on Vocals was Bobby Glover, he later went on in 1984 to have his own Album Released on Columbia Records called “Bad Bobby Glover”

Trying to remember things that happened around this period is, I must admit is “Getting Harder” I believe I finally moved to the Cobholm Branch of the Co-op Butchery’s, around the October/ November time in 1982.

I was still using my Bike to get to Work, but it only took about 20 minutes to get there, which was a lot better than more than an Hour to Caister!

It turned out, there were about 3 Full-Time Women and about 3 Part-Time Women, who worked there, there was also a Shop-Manager, but I cant remember his Name, but I got on with him Great!

As I said previously, I was on my own in the Butchery Section, which was Great, but I had to do everything myself, Cutting & Displaying the Meat, serving the Customers, taking the Money, keeping the Book work up to date, Keeping my Section Clean & Tidy, but as I said, it was great being on my own!

As for our Home life, we were coming up to our First Christmas in our New House, which we had now been in just under 1 Year, we had moved into the previous January.

The House was alright, but the Area & the Neighbours were not that great, and little did we know then, we were going to spent another 11 Years in this House, apart from a 3 Month period around 1986 (3.5 years later), when we Moved to Norwich, which is about 20 Miles away!

As for the Music, a Great Album which was to be Released in a few months time in 1983, was 3 by Zapp, led by Roger Troutman, this was to be their 3rd Release out of 6 Studio Abums!

They had some Great Music Released up until Roger Troutman’s un-timely Death in 1999, along with his brother Larry (Band Member and Manager).

This Album had some Classics including “Heartbreaker” I Can Make You Dance and my 2 favorites “Play Some Blues” and Tut Tut (Jazz).
