In this Series of Posts, I will writing about a Particular Classic Soul/Funk Album from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s

The one’s that stand out in my Mind, as The Best Albums ever Released. All of them, I would have purchased on Vinyl many Years ago and now have most of them on CD or Download today.

You may have Differing view’s (as we all do) on these Choices, but these are my Favorites!

Number 18….GIL SCOTT-HERON….REAL EYES

The Album in this Post, is a bit Different from the Other Album Posts, when Originally Released some 32 Years ago, in 1980, it was only Available in Japan, so unless you had Plenty of Cash & got it on Import, Like me you may have Missed this Great Album by GSH.

Entitled “Real Eyes” and Released on the “Arista Record Label” it was GSH’s 11th out of 15 Studio Album’s Released, He also had 9 Live Album’s Released and 11 Compilation’s, during his Career.

The Album was Produced by GSH and Malcolm Cecil, see Personel and Track Listing Below.

I First heard the Whole Album back in 2010, when it was Released and Re-Mastered as a sort of “Best Of” series on Sony Records, their were 3 Albums in Total on 1 CD, including this Album and the Next 2 Albums on Arista Records “Moving Target” and “Reflections”

But as I have said in a Previous Post, I Saw “Black Wax” Back in 1983 on TV, and Later Purchased the DVD, Which Featured the “Amnesia Express” and the Track “Waiting For The Axe To Fall”

This was the First of Gil Scott Heron’s Albums to Feature His New Band “Amnesia Express” they were with him for Many year’s to come, the Band’s “Bass Player” was Robert Gordon, what a Great bass player he is!

Check out the Live Version of “Waiting For the Axe to Fall” from GSH’s DVD “Black Wax” with the Great Bass Playing of “Robert Gordon”

What a Great Album this is, featuring 2 of my Favorite GSH Track’s of All-Time, The Great Bass Driven Track “Waiting For The Axe to Fall” and the Completely Different Style of Track “Your Daddy Loves You”

3 other Great Tracks on the Album are 1, 5 and 7.

This is normally my Week for a Life Story Post, but I thought I would write a Post/Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron, who Passed this Week.

He was one of the Artists I have seen in Concert, a few Years ago now, about 27 I believe, how time flies!

I remember about 30 years ago in the UK, there was a TV Documentary on  BBC 2 on a Sunday Evening, it was called “Black Wax” and it Featured Gil Scott-Heron, his Music, Poetry etc it also featured GSH walking around Washington Dc, showing you the Well Off Parts of the City and the Not So Well off Parts!

That Program was a Great Insight to GSH, his Music and Life, some 20 odd Years later I Purchased it on DVD.

Recently (6 weeks ago) I had to spend a night in Hospital, and it was this DVD I took with me (and the Wife’s Portable DVD Player, of course) that was the Best 2 Hours I spent in Hospital and the Quickest!

If you ever get the chance to watch the DVD, have a look at the Music Section, and play “Waiting For The Axe To Fall” what a Great Performance by GSH The Horn Section and especially the Bass Player!

Just found the Video of the above on YouTube, press Number 1 below!

He made some Great Music over the period of his Career, If I had to say what were his Top 5 Songs, I would say the Following:

5….Home Is Where The Hatred Is
4….Lady Day and John Coltrane
3…The Bottle
2…Winter in America
1…Wating For The Axe To Fall Live and Studio

Keep an Look Out next week, I shall Feature a GSH Mix on this Blog!

Some of the other Acts I have seen in concert over the years, I see my Favorite Band “Slave” about 25 years ago at a place called “The Pink Elephant” in Luton uk.

Steve Arrington had left them by this time, but they still put on a Great Show!

The picture above was taken by somebody I know at the Hammersmith Odeon Concert in London a few days later!

A few other Acts I have seen are “Change” KleeerSteve ArringtonLevel 42 “Gil Scott Heron”Dante “Mtume” Brass Construction “Dazz Band” Alexander O’neal ” Cherrelle” Michael Jackson”

Of these I would say the Best Concert was Brass Construction, before the Concert I actually met all the Band members including Randy Muller, I also have a signed Program from all the members.

I also thought Kleeer, level 42 and Mtume were Great! but these are among my Favorite Soul Bands, so perhaps thats why I liked them more!

GSH was alright, allthough he did start knocking “White People” during his show, as my Wife clearly remembered and always reminds of!

Steve Arrington was Good, although he never did any of the “Hall of Fame” stuff!

The Micheal Jackson Concert was the “Bad Tour” the one that Princess Diana attended!
I would not probably have seen “Jacko” but I used to have a Shop in them days, and I used to sell “Pepsi” and entered a Competition with them and Won!
2 tickets to see Jacko, so I went with my Wife, who does like “MJ”
It was a Good concert, but not really my “cup of tea” Susan thought he was Great!

Alexander O’neal was Alright, but I have recently seen him in a different light, through the English Television Show “Wife Swap” please watch this program, its in 5 parts!, you will see what I mean!

As for the “Dazz Band” please come back in the Future and read ” Part 3″ of this Blog entry!
